Navigating work after loss is a delicate balance between personal healing and professional responsibilities. This week, I reflect on my own experience returning to work after losing Billie, the challenges I faced, and the steps that helped me regain my footing.

Whether it’s setting boundaries, leaning on a trusted colleague, or simply allowing yourself grace, small actions can make a big difference. Grief doesn’t follow a set path, but with support and intention, it’s possible to find your way forward.

I also share some exciting updates, including a first look at the Room Eleven video essay series, and a quote that’s been resonating with me this week: "Let them."

Catch all this and more in this week’s edition. As always, your thoughts and feedback are welcome—I’d love to hear from you!

At Room Eleven, resilience fuels our mission to break the silence around stillbirth and create meaningful resources like the Still Billie box. This week, we’ve made strides on multiple fronts:

  • Grief, Growth & Resilience Book: Writing has begun on a heartfelt guide inspired by the 7 lessons learned after losing Billie, aimed at supporting bereaved families.

  • Stillbirth Awareness Campaigns: Moonee Valley Council highlighted the final run of our year-long 6 km-a-day challenge, underscoring the impact of our awareness efforts.

  • Exciting Plans for 2025: A new social media series will answer one question daily about grief, growth, and resilience, sparking essential conversations.

  • Cochrane Membership: Joining this global leader in evidence-based research strengthens our advocacy with world-class resources and collaboration opportunities.

This Week in Room Eleven: Adjusting Your Sails

In this week’s Room Eleven newsletter, we explore the theme of resilience with the lesson, “You can’t change the weather, but you can adjust your sails.” Reflecting on the importance of adapting to life’s challenges, we discuss balancing responsibilities, embracing purpose, and staying committed even when the path isn’t straightforward.

Highlights include an update on our 6 km daily runs honouring the six babies stillborn each day in Australia, with details about the final commemorative run on 31st December. We also dive into what we’ve been watching (Skeleton Crew), share a top product recommendation (Bose NC 700 headphones), and provide a practical travel tip for staying entertained on the go.

Join the Final Run for Stillbirth Awareness: 366 Days, 2,196km

This year, I’ve run 6km every single day to honour the thousands of babies born still in 2024. On 31st December, I’ll complete this journey with a final 6km run—not just for the 6 babies lost that day but for every stillborn baby this year.

Room Eleven is about resilience, growth after loss, and sharing stories. This challenge has embodied those values, turning grief into action and creating space for families to feel seen and heard.

Join the final run in Melbourne or virtually via Strava, share the journey, or donate to support Room Eleven’s work for bereaved families. Together, let’s make every step count.

Grief, Healing, and Finding Purpose Through Helping Others – In this week’s Room Eleven newsletter, I reflect on the healing power of supporting others through their grief journey. Grief can often feel isolating, but reaching out and offering support can create meaningful connections and shift our own perspective. I explore the importance of shared vulnerability, how helping others can turn pain into purpose, and the significance of community in the healing process.

Honeysuckle FC: A UK Football Club for Bereaved Individuals – I’ve started discussions with Honeysuckle FC, a UK-based football club dedicated to supporting bereaved individuals. Their mission to foster connection, community, and healing through sport is inspiring, and I’m excited about the potential to replicate their approach here in Australia. Learn how this initiative could change the landscape of grief support for men and families.

Personal Project Update – Earlier this year, I contributed to a book project where I wrote a heartfelt letter to my past self, offering advice to others navigating grief. I’ve received an update that the editors are thrilled with my contribution, and I’m looking forward to seeing the final version. I share how these kinds of projects reflect the power of turning pain into purpose.

Longevity and Passion in Life – What I’m listening to this week: The Modern Wisdom Podcast featuring Dr. Mike Israetel. The episode delves into the science of longevity and the role of passion in maintaining health over time. Staying engaged in meaningful activities is essential not only for personal growth but for overall well-being. This concept ties closely with my work at Room Eleven and my own journey of evolving through grief.
